What Is an MM to Inches Converter?

An MM to Inches Converter expresses a millimeter length in inches using the exact international inch definition. It is useful when a drawing, measuring tool or product specification uses a different unit system from the one you need.

Enter a whole number, decimal value or zero to see the result immediately. Choose a display precision or show a fractional-inch approximation for a tape measure. Swap units to enter decimal or fractional inches and convert back to millimeters.

The prefilled 200 mm measurement is an example. Reset converter restores that example, four decimal places and the default fraction settings.

How to Convert MM to Inches

  1. Take the measured length in millimeters.
  2. Divide it by 25.4.
  3. Round the final inch result to the number of decimal places needed.

For example, 10 mm ÷ 25.4 ≈ 0.3937 inches. A decimal millimeter input follows the same rule: 12.7 mm is exactly 0.5 inch.

Keep millimeters and square millimeters separate. This page converts length only, so entering an area would not produce a valid area conversion.

MM to Inches Formula

Inches = millimeters ÷ 25.4

The NIST length-unit reference identifies the international inch as exactly 25.4 millimeters. This definition supplies the conversion factor; it is not an empirical estimate.

Using a shortened multiplier such as 0.03937 introduces rounding before the result is complete. The converter instead keeps decimal and fractional inputs as exact ratios and applies display rounding at the end.

How Many MM Are in One Inch?

1 inch is exactly 25.4 mm. Half an inch is 12.7 mm, and a quarter inch is 6.35 mm. These are exact relationships for the international inch.

One millimeter is much smaller than one inch: 1 mm ≈ 0.0394 inches at four decimal places. A larger numerical reading in millimeters can describe the same physical length as a smaller reading in inches.

How to Convert Inches to MM

The reverse formula is millimeters = inches × 25.4. Select Swap units to make Inches the input. For example, 0.25 inches × 25.4 = 6.35 mm.

You can also enter 1/4 or ¼ instead of 0.25. For a measurement over one inch, use a mixed fraction such as 1 1/4, which equals 1.25 inches and converts to 31.75 mm. Use a space between the whole number and the fraction.

The fraction denominator must be positive. An improper fraction such as 5/4 is accepted on its own; a mixed number should have a fractional part smaller than one. Invalid fractions are explained beside the input rather than producing an incorrect result.

200 MM to Inches

The default example converts 200 millimeters as follows:

200 ÷ 25.4 = 7.874015748031 inches (12-place display)

200 mm ≈ 7.8740 inches

With two decimal places, the result is 7.87 inches; with eight, it is 7.87401575 inches. To the nearest 1/16 inch, it is approximately 7 7/8 inches. The decimal result stays visible because the fraction represents an additional rounding choice.

Decimal Inches vs Fractional Inches

Decimal inches express parts of an inch using decimal places, while fractional inches express them as ratios. For example, 0.5 inch = 1/2 inch and 0.125 inch = 1/8 inch.

A decimal result is not automatically an exact tape-measure fraction. Converting 25 mm gives approximately 0.9843 inches. Rounding it to the nearest 1/16 inch produces approximately 1 inch, which is exactly 25.4 mm and therefore 0.4 mm longer than the original length.

The calculator labels rounded fractions with ≈ and reports their absolute rounding difference in inches. An equals sign indicates that the fraction exactly matches the entered physical measurement.

How to Convert MM to Fractional Inches

First divide millimeters by 25.4 to obtain inches. Then round to the chosen subdivision: 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 inch. The converter reduces the resulting fraction and carries a full numerator into the whole-inch part when needed.

Examples that already land exactly on common fractions include 6.35 mm = 1/4 inch, 3.175 mm = 1/8 inch and 1.5875 mm = 1/16 inch. An exact halfway case rounds toward the larger non-negative measurement.

A small positive value can round to 0 at a coarse fractional resolution. Its decimal conversion is retained separately, with scientific notation when the selected decimal places would otherwise hide the value. Fraction settings do not alter future swaps or reverse calculations.

For a dimensioned part or a manufacturing drawing, retain the required precision and check its specified tolerance. A convenient fractional approximation does not establish that an inch-sized item is interchangeable with a metric-sized one.

Millimeters vs Inches

Millimeters, also spelled millimetres, are metric length units. There are 10 mm in 1 cm and 1,000 mm in 1 meter. Inches are used in US customary and imperial measurements; 12 inches make one foot, which equals exactly 304.8 mm.
