How to Use the CM to Inches Converter

Enter a measurement in the Centimeters field and read the inches result immediately. Whole numbers, decimals and zero are accepted. Choose 2, 4, 6 or 8 decimal places to match how much detail you want to display.

  1. Enter a length, such as 60 cm.
  2. Read the equivalent in inches and the formula beside it.
  3. Enable Show fractional inches when you want a tape-measure approximation.
  4. Use Swap units to enter inches instead, or copy and print the current result.

Swap units preserves the physical measurement, including digits not shown on screen. If the swapped input is shortened, a note explains that its full value is retained until you edit it. Reset converter restores the labeled 60 cm example and default settings.

How to Convert CM to Inches

Divide the centimeter measurement by 2.54. For example, a 15 cm object measures 15 ÷ 2.54 ≈ 5.9055 inches. This same calculation works for a decimal measurement such as 2.54 cm, which is exactly 1 inch.

For 100 cm, the exact relationship produces 39.370078740157 inches when shown to 12 decimal places. At the default four places, it is 39.3701 inches. The shorter display is rounded; the unit definition has not changed.

Use the actual measured value rather than rounding centimeters first. Keeping the input digits and rounding the final result avoids adding an unnecessary rounding step.

CM to Inches Formula

Inches = centimeters ÷ 2.54

The international inch is exactly 25.4 millimeters, so it is exactly 2.54 centimeters. The NIST explanation of length units documents this definition.

Multiplying by a shortened factor such as 0.3937 is useful for a quick mental estimate, but it loses digits. This converter uses the exact relationship instead. Internally, decimal inputs and fractions are retained as exact ratios; display settings do not feed rounded values back into the calculation.

How Many Inches Are in 1 CM?

1 cm is approximately 0.3937 inches at four decimal places. With more digits, 1 ÷ 2.54 = 0.393700787402 inches, rounded to 12 decimal places.

One centimeter is one hundredth of a meter. An inch is larger than a centimeter, so converting a positive centimeter measurement to inches makes the numerical value smaller. The physical length stays the same.

60 CM to Inches

A 60 cm shelf, screen dimension or fabric length converts as follows:

60 ÷ 2.54 = 23.622047244094 in (12-place display)

60 cm ≈ 23.6220 inches

At two decimal places the answer is 23.62 inches; at six it is 23.622047 inches; at eight it is 23.62204724 inches. Choosing more displayed digits does not make the original tape measurement more precise.

To the nearest 1/8 inch, 60 cm is about 23 5/8 inches. That fraction is a separate rounded representation, rather than a replacement for the decimal conversion.

How to Convert Decimal Inches to Fractions

A measuring tape often marks halves, quarters, eighths or smaller fractions of an inch. After converting centimeters to decimal inches, choose the nearest 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64 inch. The converter rounds to that interval and reduces the fraction to its simplest form.

For example, 1.27 cm is exactly 0.5 inch, or 1/2 inch. By contrast, 1 cm is approximately 3/8 inch at a 1/8-inch resolution. Exact matches use an equals sign; rounded fractions use ≈ and show their absolute difference from the original measurement.

At an exact halfway point, the fraction rounds upward. If rounding reaches a whole inch, the whole-number part carries correctly. A very small measurement may round to 0 fractional inches; its nonzero decimal result remains visible.

Choose a fraction resolution appropriate for your measuring tool and project. A rounded fraction does not establish that a part meets a specified dimensional tolerance.

How to Convert Inches to CM

Multiply inches by 2.54. For example, 12 inches × 2.54 = 30.48 cm. Click Swap units to make Inches the input field. Swapping changes the input value to its equivalent in the new unit rather than assigning a different unit to the same number.

Reverse mode accepts decimal inches and fractional entries such as 1/2, 3/8 or 1 1/4. A mixed fraction combines a whole number with a proper fraction. The denominator must be greater than zero. A 1 1/4-inch measurement converts exactly to 3.175 cm.

You can swap back repeatedly without progressively rounding the physical measurement. Once you edit the input, the newly entered value becomes the measurement in the selected input unit.

Centimeters vs Inches

Centimeters, also spelled centimetres, are metric length units. There are 100 cm in 1 meter and 10 millimeters in 1 cm. Inches belong to US customary and imperial length systems, with 12 inches in 1 foot. One foot is exactly 30.48 cm.

The conversion applies to a single length, including height, width, depth or a circumference. Square centimeters and square inches describe area; their factor must be squared. Cubic measurements require a cubed factor.

Yes. Enable Show fractional inches and choose a nearest 1/8, 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64-inch resolution. The fraction appears separately and is labeled approximate unless it exactly matches the measurement.

Is 2.54 cm exactly one inch?

Yes. The international inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters. Some other centimeter inputs produce a decimal inch value that needs rounding for display.

Why do very small values use scientific notation?

If the selected decimal places would hide a nonzero value as zero, the converter switches to scientific notation. Very large values also use scientific notation to keep the result readable.
