What Is Running Pace?

Running pace is the time taken to cover a unit of distance, usually a kilometer or mile. A pace of 5:00 min/km means five minutes per kilometer. Pace and speed describe the same motion in different ways: a smaller pace value corresponds to a higher speed.

This calculator uses distance and elapsed time to find average pace, or rearranges the relationship to calculate finish time and distance. Its projections assume constant pace. They do not predict how terrain, weather, fatigue or your training will affect a future race.

How to Use the Running Pace Calculator

  1. For Find pace, choose a race distance or type a custom distance in kilometers or miles.
  2. Enter running time using separate hours, minutes and seconds fields.
  3. Choose the pace unit for the headline, and read the equivalent pace and average speed.
  4. Use Finish time, Find distance, Running splits or Speed to pace for the corresponding calculation.

For a 5K in 25 minutes, enter 0 hours, 25 minutes and 0 seconds. Switching distance or pace units converts the quantity rather than changing its physical meaning. Minutes and seconds in a duration stay below 60; decimal seconds are accepted.

How to Calculate Running Pace: Formula and Examples

Convert the duration to seconds before dividing by distance. For 25 minutes, total time is 25 × 60 = 1,500 seconds. Over 5 km, that is 1,500 / 5 = 300 sec/km, or 5:00 min/km.

Pace (sec/km) = total time (seconds) / distance (km)

Finish time (seconds) = pace (sec/km) × distance (km)

Distance (km) = total time (seconds) / pace (sec/km)

At 5:00 min/km, a 10 km distance takes 300 × 10 = 3,000 seconds, or 50 minutes. At 6:00 min/km, 30 minutes covers 1,800 / 360 = 5 km. All modes use these same relationships.

How to Calculate Pace Per Kilometer

Divide total seconds by kilometers, then convert the answer into minutes and seconds. A 10K completed in 55 minutes takes 3,300 / 10 = 330 seconds per kilometer. Since 330 seconds is five minutes and 30 seconds, pace is 5:30 min/km.

Do not type that pace as 5.30 decimal minutes. Decimal 5.30 minutes equals five minutes and 18 seconds. The calculator gives minutes and seconds separate fields to make the distinction clear.

How to Calculate Pace Per Mile

Divide total time by distance measured in miles. Running 3 miles in 27 minutes gives 9:00 min/mile. If the original distance is in kilometers, first convert it using 1 mile = exactly 1.609344 km.

A 25-minute 5K is 1,500 seconds over 5 / 1.609344 miles. The result is 482.8032 seconds per mile, displayed as 8:02.8 min/mile. The rounded “3.1 miles” description of a 5K is useful informally, but this calculation uses the exact conversion.

How to Convert Min/KM to Min/Mile

Multiply seconds per kilometer by 1.609344 to obtain seconds per mile. For 5:00 min/km, 300 × 1.609344 = 482.8032 sec/mile. Divide seconds per mile by 1.609344 to return to seconds per kilometer.

The Pace unit control handles that conversion for both input and output. It retains the underlying pace rather than repeatedly calculating from a rounded clock display. Thus, converting pace to miles and back does not change the planned physical pace.

How to Convert Running Pace to Speed

Pace is time per distance; speed is distance per time. Use speed (km/h) = 3,600 / pace (sec/km), or 60 / pace expressed in decimal minutes per kilometer. At 5:00 min/km, speed is 3,600 / 300 = 12 km/h, approximately 7.456 mph.

Read both speed units in the result card. To work in the other direction, choose Speed to pace, enter a speed in km/h or mph and read the resulting min/km and min/mile. For example, 10 km/h equals 6:00 min/km.

5K Running Pace Calculator

Select the 5 km preset to calculate an observed average pace or a constant-pace finish time. A 20-minute 5K averages 4:00 min/km. A 25-minute 5K averages 5:00 min/km, while a 30-minute 5K averages 6:00 min/km.

For a target pace of 5:30 min/km, 5 × 330 seconds gives 27:30. These are arithmetic examples, not target recommendations. Use your own distance and time measurements and check whether a watch reports moving time or elapsed time before comparing results.

Running Split Calculator: Kilometers, Miles and Track Laps

A split divides the total run into sections. Select Running splits, enter total distance and either target pace or target finish time, then choose 1 km, 1 mile, 400 meters or a custom interval. The output shows split number, covered distance, split time, cumulative time and remaining distance.

At 5:00 min/km, each 400-meter section takes 300 × 0.4 = 120 seconds, or 2:00. A 5K at that pace contains twelve full 400-meter sections and a final 200 meters taking 1:00. The last row uses the actual remaining distance instead of adding an extra full lap.

Unrounded split times sum to the target. Display rounding to a tenth of a second can make a sum of displayed individual rows differ slightly; cumulative times are calculated from unrounded values. Copy, print and CSV preserve the plan, with raw seconds and distances in CSV. The table supports up to 500 splits and explains when a larger interval is needed.

Using the 10K run pace chart

The generated 10K pace chart covers targets of 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 70 minutes. Each card shows per-kilometer and per-mile pace, speed, a 1K split and the halfway cumulative time. Select a target to load its full kilometer split plan. A 50-minute 10K gives 5:00 per kilometer and reaches 5 km at 25:00.

Half Marathon and Marathon Pace

The half-marathon preset uses 21.0975 km and the marathon preset uses 42.195 km. These distances appear in World Athletics’ terms and abbreviations. Presets retain those distances internally when displaying miles.

For a four-hour marathon, divide 14,400 seconds by 42.195 km to obtain approximately 341.2727 sec/km, or 5:41.3 min/km. For a two-hour half marathon, 7,200 / 21.0975 gives the same average pace. Holding that average is an assumption of the calculation, not a guarantee of race completion.

What Are Negative Splits?

A negative split describes covering a later comparable part of a run faster than the earlier part. A positive split describes the reverse; an even split maintains the same pace. Compare equal distances or normalized pace, since a shorter final section naturally takes less time.

The split planner here uses even pace only. It does not add hidden accelerations or automatically prescribe a negative-split strategy. If planning a changing pace, the sum of all planned segment times still needs to equal the intended total, and suitability depends on the runner and event.

Treadmill Speed vs Running Pace

Use Speed to pace to convert the treadmill’s displayed km/h or mph. A displayed 12 km/h corresponds numerically to 5:00 min/km; 6 mph corresponds to 10:00 min/mile. The conversion does not require an incline adjustment because it describes distance and time.

The same numerical treadmill and outdoor speed need not mean equal physiological effort. Equipment calibration, gradient, surface and environmental conditions can differ. This calculator does not estimate that effort difference.
