Time Duration Calculator
Find hours, minutes and seconds between times or dates.
Calculate hours worked between start and end times. Subtract unpaid breaks, add weekly work hours, convert to decimal hours, and estimate overtime and pay.
How many hours did I work? Start with 08:00–17:00 and a 30-minute unpaid break, or enter your own times. Results update instantly.
Net paid work
8h 30m
Only unpaid breaks are deducted. Enter non-overlapping durations; gaps between separate shifts are already excluded. Paid status depends on your working arrangement.
Net paid work
Wall-clock hours8h 30m
Your shift time after unpaid break deductions.
Formula
9h 00m − 0h 30m = 8h 30m
Shift paid work: 8h 30m (8.50 decimal hours). Gross: 9h 00m; unpaid breaks: 0h 30m. Wall-clock calculation.
Your shifts, notes and wage rate stay in this tab. Nothing is saved automatically. Copy and CSV downloads happen only when you choose them.
Total: 4h 20m · 4.33 decimal hours
Total task time
4h 20m
3 task durations added using exact minutes.
Formula
80 + 50 + 130 = 260 minutes
Total: 4h 20m (4.33 decimal hours).
To answer “how many hours did I work?”, enter your clock-in time, clock-out time, and unpaid break. The single-shift result updates immediately. Use Weekly Timesheet for a time card, Biweekly Timesheet for two weeks, Add Task Hours for durations without clock readings, or Decimal Hours for conversion.
The labeled sample is 8 AM to 5 PM with a 30-minute unpaid break. Remove the break for a shift without one. Records stay in this tab and are not automatically saved. A work date on a single shift is optional; dates are required for timesheet attribution.
Convert clock readings to minutes since midnight. Subtract start minutes from end minutes for gross duration, then subtract unpaid breaks. From 8 AM to 5 PM: 1,020 − 480 = 540 minutes. After a 30-minute break: 540 − 30 = 510 minutes = 8h 30m.
The formulas are gross minutes = end minutes − start minutes, net minutes = gross minutes − unpaid minutes, and decimal hours = net minutes ÷ 60. For a confirmed next-day end, add 1,440 minutes before subtracting. Input durations are retained as integer minutes; displayed decimals are never added back into timesheet totals.
Subtract an unpaid lunch from gross hours. A 9:15 AM–5:45 PM shift is 8h 30m before breaks. A 45-minute unpaid lunch leaves 7h 45m, or 7.75 decimal hours. From 7:30 AM to 4:15 PM with the same break, the result is 8 hours.
Add several breaks and explicitly mark each paid or unpaid. A 15-minute paid rest break remains inside the shift total and is not added again. Combined breaks cannot exceed the shift. These are duration entries: enter non-overlapping portions of time because their positions cannot be inferred.
A break called lunch is not automatically unpaid. Use your actual working arrangement and check applicable rules. A gap between separately entered morning and afternoon shifts is already excluded; do not subtract it again.
For 10 PM to 6 AM, confirm Ends next day: 360 + 1,440 − 1,320 = 480 minutes, or 8 hours gross. A 30-minute unpaid break leaves 7h 30m, or 7.50 hours. An earlier clock-out otherwise produces an error, rather than an automatic overnight assumption.
Identical readings mean zero hours unless you confirm a next-day end, representing a full 24-hour shift. Shifts longer than 24 hours are rejected. Supply a start date to see the next-day end date.
This tool measures nominal clock hours, treating the next-day offset as 24 hours. It does not resolve timezones, daylight saving transitions, repeated local times, or nonexistent times. Actual elapsed work during a clock change can differ; verify the relevant offsets separately.
How many hours is 8am to 5pm? It is 9 hours before breaks, 8h 30m after a 30-minute unpaid lunch, or 8 hours after a one-hour lunch. The following examples have no break deducted.
| Shift | Gross duration |
|---|---|
| 8 AM to 5 PM | 9h 00m |
| 9 AM to 5 PM | 8h 00m |
| 8 AM to 4 PM | 8h 00m |
| 8 AM to 3 PM | 7h 00m |
| 7 AM to 4 PM | 9h 00m |
| 8 AM to 2 PM | 6h 00m |
| 7 AM to 9 PM | 14h 00m |
| 11 AM to 4 PM | 5h 00m |
| 11 AM to 5 PM | 6h 00m |
| 10 AM to 8 PM | 10h 00m |
| 10 AM to 1 PM | 3h 00m |
| 2 PM to 5 PM | 3h 00m |
| 9 AM to noon | 3h 00m |
| 11 PM to 6 AM next day | 7h 00m |
Eight working hours after 8 AM ends at 4 PM without an unpaid break, or 4:30 PM with a 30-minute break. Eight hours after 7:30 AM ends at 3:30 PM without breaks.
Calculate each shift after unpaid breaks, then add exact minutes for the week. A week of 8h 30m, 8h, 7h 45m, 8h 15m, and 8h totals 40h 30m, or 40.50 hours. Adding rounded shift decimals can introduce avoidable differences, so this calculator adds minutes first.
Weekly Timesheet covers seven days; Biweekly Timesheet covers fourteen. Monday is the default start. Choose a different date to define another workweek start day. Expand a card to edit its times, breaks, notes, or day. Use Blank Workdays for an empty sheet, or copy the first shift across selected days for a regular schedule.
Biweekly results show each week’s hours and combined time. Weekly overtime gives each workweek its own threshold: 39 hours in week 1 and 45 hours in week 2 gives 84 total hours and 5 overtime hours at a 40-hour weekly threshold.
In a timesheet, select Add Shift and assign the new record to the same day. Working 9 AM–noon and 1 PM–5:30 PM gives 3h + 4h 30m = 7h 30m. The one-hour gap is outside both records and needs no extra deduction.
Label, duplicate, remove, or edit shifts independently. Duplicating a record preserves times and breaks; change its day or times to avoid overlap. Overlaps block the combined result, including a night shift that overlaps the following morning. Up to 100 records are supported. Partly entered records also block totals; completely blank days are excluded.
Add Task Hours accepts task names and durations instead of clock readings. Design work of 1h 20m, emails of 0h 50m, and development of 2h 10m gives 80 + 50 + 130 = 260 minutes: 4h 20m, or 4.33 displayed decimal hours.
Add, duplicate, or remove tasks and edit names. Minute fields accept 0–59; write 1 hour 20 minutes rather than 80 in a minute field. Copy, print, and CSV use the same exact total. This mode adds durations; it cannot detect whether tasks happened simultaneously.
Divide minutes by 60, then add whole hours: 8 + 30 ÷ 60 = 8.50 hours. Clock and decimal notation differ: 8h 30m is not 8.30 decimal hours. In decimal notation, 0.30 hours is 18 minutes.

For reverse conversion, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 7.75 hours is 7h 45m. Decimal Hours accepts up to six decimal places and rounds reverse conversions to the nearest whole minute, carrying a rounded 60 minutes into the next hour. Reports retain the entered decimal for reference.
A time card calculator turns clock-in, clock-out, and break entries into daily and period totals. A timesheet helps check work records, compare scheduled and recorded time, or prepare payroll information. Keep original records if you need more detail than a duration estimate.
Daily display subtotals use the shift’s start date. Weekly overtime instead allocates clock intervals at the selected workweek boundary. Sunday 11 PM to Monday 7 AM with a Monday week start and no unpaid breaks contributes one hour to the earlier workweek and seven to the next.
An unpaid break entered only as a duration has no known position. If its shift crosses a workweek boundary, weekly pay estimation asks you to split the record at midnight and assign each break to its actual side. It never silently guesses. Daily overtime uses combined shift-start-day totals, an explicit estimate convention.
Enable Estimate pay and enter an hourly rate. Without overtime, gross pay = net minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate. For 8h 30m at 20 per hour: 8.5 × 20 = 170.00.
Choose USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, PKR, INR, AUD, or AED through the shared currency preference. Changing currency changes formatting only; it does not convert wages through an exchange rate. Monetary totals keep two decimals, including PKR paisa. Regular and overtime pay are each rounded to currency minor units, then added.
Gross pay excludes tax, deductions, benefits, shift premiums, and other adjustments. This estimator does not determine a statutory regular rate or guarantee a payslip amount.
Choose no overtime, a weekly threshold, or a daily threshold. Only one rule applies: overtime hours = max(0, applicable hours − threshold). Regular hours are the remainder. Pay is regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier.
At 42h 30m in one week, a 40-hour threshold, $20 hourly rate, and 1.5 multiplier, regular pay is $800, overtime is 2.5 hours at $30, overtime pay is $75, and estimated gross pay is $875.00. A single-shift weekly estimate includes only that shift; record every shift to estimate a full workweek.
Thresholds and multipliers are user assumptions. Actual rules depend on jurisdiction, classification, agreements, and definitions of worked time. The U.S. Department of Labor overtime advisor discusses federal overtime for covered, nonexempt U.S. employees. These are U.S. rules and do not establish the rules for visitors elsewhere.
A 12-hour clock needs AM or PM; a 24-hour clock does not. 8 AM is 08:00, 5:30 PM is 17:30, midnight is 12 AM or 00:00, and noon is 12 PM or 12:00. Strict 12-hour notation runs from 1 through 12, so 0:30 PM is invalid.
For military time, choose 24-hour format and enter 0800 as hours 08 and minutes 00. Enter 1700 as hours 17 and minutes 00: the interval is 9 hours before breaks. Invalid readings such as 25:00 or 13:75 are rejected. Finish a partial entry before switching formats.
Paid breaks remain inside net paid time; unpaid breaks reduce it. A 9-hour shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch and 15-minute paid rest break gives 8h 30m paid time. Entering a break does not establish its legal paid status.
For U.S. context, see the Department of Labor’s FLSA overview, hours worked fact sheet, and break and meal period information. Check your own employment arrangement and local authority for applicable treatment.
No punch rounding is applied. Reconcile any workplace rounding policy separately rather than assuming these exact-minute totals include it.
The Hours Calculator focuses on shifts, unpaid breaks, timesheets, task totals, and optional earnings. Need to find the time between two clock times or timestamps? Use our Time Duration Calculator for a general elapsed interval.
For calendar days or business days between dates, use the Date Difference Calculator. These answer different questions from net work hours after breaks.
Subtract clock-in from clock-out, adding 24 hours only for a confirmed overnight end. Subtract unpaid breaks and divide net minutes by 60 for decimal hours.
9 hours before breaks. A 30-minute unpaid lunch leaves 8h 30m; a one-hour unpaid lunch leaves 8 hours.
8 hours before breaks, or 7h 30m after a 30-minute unpaid break.
Enter its duration and explicitly choose Unpaid if that matches your arrangement. Only unpaid rows reduce the shift total.
Select a weekly or daily rule, threshold, and multiplier. Hours above that threshold are overtime under your assumptions; this does not determine the applicable legal rule.
Choose Weekly Timesheet, set the workweek start date, and enter each shift and unpaid break. Exact minutes are added and daily subtotals are shown.
Divide 30 by 60 and add 8: 8 + 0.5 = 8.50 decimal hours. It is not 8.30.
7h 45m, because the fractional 0.75 hour multiplied by 60 is 45 minutes.
Enter the readings and confirm Ends next day. 10 PM to 6 AM is 8 hours before breaks, or 7h 30m after a 30-minute unpaid break. This uses nominal clock hours without DST adjustment.
Choose 24-hour format, hours 00–23, and minutes 00–59. From 08:00 to 17:00 is 9 hours gross.
Yes. Add a shift in a timesheet and assign it to the same day. Gaps are already excluded. Correct overlaps before using combined totals.
Enable Estimate pay and enter a rate and currency. Without overtime, multiply exact net hours by the rate: 8h 30m at 20 per hour gives 170.00 gross before deductions.
No. Paid breaks stay included. Their treatment is an explicit input, not a legal classification by this calculator.
Confirm Ends next day for a real overnight shift, or correct the reading. An earlier clock-out is never automatically interpreted as tomorrow.
Elapsed time covers the interval. Net paid work here removes unpaid breaks. Nominal clock hours can differ from actual elapsed time during a clock change and from a statutory definition of hours worked.
