What Is a Final Grade Calculator?

It answers the questions students ask most before and after exams: what’s my grade now, and what do I need on the final?

  1. Final exam

Enter your current grade, the final’s weight and the grade you want, to see the score you need — or whether it’s already secured or out of reach.

  2. Weighted grade

List assignments, quizzes and exams with their scores and weights. Leave ungraded work empty; tick “If” for a what-if score.

  3. Points

Enter points earned and possible for each item when your syllabus grades by total points. Mark bonus points as extra credit.

  4. Letter grades

Edit the letter thresholds to match your syllabus. The letter for your result and the needed-score table update instantly.

  5. Copy, export, print

Copy a summary, download the items as CSV, or print a clean report.

How to Calculate Your Final Grade

Your final grade in a course is the weighted total of every graded component once all work is in. Multiply each score by its weight and add the results. With homework 90% (20%), midterm 80% (30%) and final exam 88% (50%): 18 + 24 + 44 = 86%.

Before everything is graded, you have a current grade, not a final one. It is calculated only over the work graded so far, so it can still move up or down. The calculator labels the two clearly.

A course grade is different from your GPA: GPA averages your results across courses, weighted by credit hours. Once you have your course grades, use the GPA & CGPA Calculator to see their effect on your GPA.

How Weighted Grades Work

A weight is the share of the course grade an item is worth. Heavier items move your grade more.

Weighted grade (all work graded)

Grade = Σ(score × weight)

Example: 90 × 0.2 + 80 × 0.3 + 88 × 0.5 = 86%

Current standing (work in progress)

Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(graded weights)

Example: (13.8 + 12.75 + 19.5) ÷ 55% ≈ 83.73%

Dividing by the weight graded so far — not by 100% — is the key step. Dividing by 100% before everything is graded treats unfinished work as zeros and makes your grade look far lower than it is. The calculator also shows the lowest and highest final grade still possible.

When you group items into categories, each item counts within its category in proportion to its own weight, and the category weight is the sum of its items’ weights.

How to Calculate Grades Based on Points

When a syllabus grades by points, add the points — don’t average the percentages.

Points-based grade

Grade = total points earned ÷ total points possible × 100

Example: (9 + 60) ÷ (10 + 100) × 100 ≈ 62.73%

Averaging item percentages gives every item the same importance. In a points system a 100-point exam should count ten times as much as a 10-point quiz, so 90% and 60% average to 75% but the real grade is 62.73%. Use the Percentage Calculator for a single score out of a total.

How to Calculate Your Final Exam Grade

If the final is the only work left, one formula gives the score you need.

Final exam score needed

Needed = (Desired − Current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

Desired
course grade you want (%)
Current
grade on completed work (%)
w
final exam weight as a decimal

Example: (85 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 92%

Current × (1 − w) is the part of the course grade you have already secured. The rest must come from the final. If other work is still to be graded (a project or lab), open “Other work still to be graded” and enter its weight and the score you expect; that expected score is a what-if, not a real grade.

Find the score you need on your final

What Grade Do I Need on My Final?

Already secured

Zero or less needed: even 0% on the final keeps your target.

Reachable

Between 0% and 100%: the number shows how hard you need to push.

Not reachable

Over 100%: impossible on a normal exam without bonus points or extra credit.

With 78% now, a final worth 20% and a 90% goal, you would need (90 − 62.4) ÷ 0.2 = 138%, so 90% is out of reach; 100% on the final gives 82.4%. The calculator’s table shows the score you need for every letter grade at once, so you can pick a realistic target.

How to Calculate Semester Grades

Many schools build a semester grade from grading periods: for example two quarters worth 40% each and a semester exam worth 20%. With quarters of 88% and 82% and an exam score of 75%: 88 × 0.4 + 82 × 0.4 + 75 × 0.2 = 83%. Enter each period as an item in the weighted mode, with its weight.

Weighted vs Unweighted Grades

Unweighted

Every item counts equally

A simple average. Correct only when all items carry the same weight or the same points.

Weighted

Items count by their weight

Exams, projects and homework count differently, as set by the syllabus. Most college courses work this way.

“Weighted” also has a second meaning in high school GPAs, where honors and AP courses earn extra grade points. That is a GPA question; this page is about the grade inside one course.

Final Grade Examples

Worked examples for every mode. Select “Try this example” to load one into the calculator.

  • Before the final

    Score needed for an 85%

You have 82% going into a final worth 30% and want 85% overall.

    1. Points already secured: 82 × 0.70 = 57.4
    2. (85 − 57.4) ÷ 0.30 = 92

You need 92% on the final.

  • Reality check

A target that’s out of reach

Your current grade is 78%, the final is worth 20%, and you want 90%.

    1. (90 − 78 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 27.6 ÷ 0.20 = 138
    2. Even 100% on the final gives 82.4%.

138% needed — not possible without extra credit.

  • Peace of mind

When your grade is already safe

A 96% average with a final worth 20%, and you need at least 75% to pass the course.

    1. Secured already: 96 × 0.80 = 76.8
    2. 76.8 is above 75, so any final score keeps you there.

Already secured — even 0% leaves you at 76.8%.

  • End of term

    Weighted course grade

    Homework 90% (20%), midterm 80% (30%), final exam 88% (50%).

    1. 90 × 0.20 + 80 × 0.30 + 88 × 0.50
    2. = 18 + 24 + 44 = 86

    Final course grade: 86% (B).

  • Mid-semester

Current grade with work still to come

    Homework 92% (15%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 78% (25%); the project (15%) and final (30%) aren’t graded yet.

    1. Earned: 13.8 + 12.75 + 19.5 = 46.05 of 55 graded points
    2. Current grade: 46.05 ÷ 55 ≈ 83.73%

83.73% so far; the final grade can still land anywhere from 46.05% to 91.05%.

  • Points syllabus

    Grade from points

A quiz scored 9/10 and an exam 60/100.

    1. (9 + 60) ÷ (10 + 100) × 100 ≈ 62.73%
    2. Averaging 90% and 60% would give 75% — wrong, because the exam has ten times the points.

    Course grade: 62.73%.

  • More than the final left

Final plus a project still to come

80% on completed work (50% of the course), a project worth 20% where you expect 90%, a final worth 30%; goal 85%.

    1. Secured and expected: 80 × 0.50 + 90 × 0.20 = 58
    2. (85 − 58) ÷ 0.30 = 90

You need 90% on the final (if the project goes as planned).

Why Your Final Grade May Differ From Your Current Grade

A current grade is a snapshot of graded work, not a prediction.

  • Heavy items are still to come. A final worth 40% can move a grade a long way in either direction.
  • Your portal may count missing work as zero or ignore categories with nothing graded yet, which changes the current figure.
  • Drops, curves and rounding. Dropping the lowest quiz, curving an exam or rounding 89.5% up can change the final result.
  • Weights change. Some syllabi re-weight categories if an assignment is cancelled.

Final Grade Calculator FAQs

What grade do I need on my final to pass?

Set the desired grade to your passing mark (often 60% or 70%) and enter your current grade and the final’s weight. With 65% now, a final worth 25% and a 60% pass mark: (60 − 65 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 45%.

How much is my final worth?

Your syllabus lists each category’s weight. If the final is 30% of the course, every 10 points you score on it moves your course grade by 3 points.

Do ungraded assignments count as zero?

Not in this calculator. An item with no score is treated as not graded yet, and your current grade is calculated on the graded work only. Some school portals do count missing work as 0 — if your portal shows a lower grade, check for missing assignments.

What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?

If they add to less than 100%, the rest is treated as work still to come. If they add to more than 100%, the calculator warns you: the syllabus probably uses points or has a category entered twice.

How does extra credit work?

In the points mode, extra credit adds to the points you earned but not to the points possible, which is how most instructors apply it. A score above 100% on an item in the weighted mode works the same way.

Can I use this as a semester grade calculator?

Yes. Enter each grading period (or quarter) as an item with its weight — for example two quarters at 40% each and a semester exam at 20%. To combine finished courses into a GPA, use the GPA & CGPA Calculator instead.

Is the result my official grade?

No. It’s an estimate based on what you enter. Instructors may round, drop lowest scores, curve or apply other rules, so your syllabus and gradebook are the final word.

Results are estimates based on your inputs. Your instructor’s syllabus and gradebook are the final authority.
